MONTREAL — “Ah, virgins!” exclaims the crop-haired man in the striped sailor sweater — just as the choir of women in vestal robes beside him open their pert little mouths and start celestial singing. 

The likeness of the male mannequin to Jean Paul Gaultier is not just striking, it is eerie. The mouth puckers, the eyes crinkle and the voice coming from the digitally created facial image is the same as that of the real designer, standing beside his work of the past 35 years. 

Later in “From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (until Oct. 2), a row of Punk mannequins, with fantastic Mohican hair and wild makeup, sneer and leer at elegant Parisiennes, who show off their perverse classics on a moving carousel, as if at a fashion show.
